Ten Years in Review
10 years ago I left the comfort of a salaried job to launch My Lawyer in Spain. A new and innovative law firm focused on international clients buying, selling and inheriting property. We decided to offer all types of support including assisting with tax returns for all nationalities moving to and doing business in Spain. Our mission and focus would be on client care and offer excellent practical legal advice for foreigners new to Spain.
Why did I launch My Lawyer in Spain?
I believed and still do that the Spanish legal market required a specialist law firm for international clients offering tailored services with offices close to where they reside.
The Journey
Wow what a 10 years it has been! The Spanish property market and trends in relocation to Spain have experienced significant changes since 2014 due to economic shifts, regulatory changes and demographic trends.
We hadn’t foreseen the issues which the UK leaving the European Union might cause. Brexit affected British citizens, previously the largest group of foreign buyers and originally our largest Client base, although that has changed over the last 10 years. The loss of free movement and restrictions on stays longer than 90 days without visas have impacted British interest, though demand is showing signs of recovery. During this period, Spain also introduced the Digital Nomad Visa and the attractive lifestyle continues to appeal to remote workers and retirees from various countries.
The COVID-19 pandemic caused temporary disruptions in 2020, but recovery was swift. Remote working trends also increased interest in rural and coastal properties. As we discussed in our recent webinar, a persistent shortage of housing, especially new builds, has been a challenge. This supply-demand imbalance has contributed to rising property prices.
The Property Market Now
And we have seen steady increases in property prices, particularly in urban centres and coastal areas, with a notable rise of 7% in 2023. However, prices in some areas are stabilising due to affordability concerns.
Recent reforms favour tenants and have led some landlords to switch from long-term to short-term rentals, exacerbating rental shortages.
My Lawyer in Spain today
In the last ten years, due to market demand, we have grown from one office in Marbella to 6 of our own offices located in Javea, Ciudad Quesada, Mojacar, Torre del Mar, Benalmadena and Marbella. We also have associated offices in Tenerife, Mallorca, Valencia, Madrid, Bilbao and Galicia.
In 10 years we have built an excellent team who are dedicated specialists in their fields and a joy to work with. I am proud to work with the individuals we have in our offices. We have a vision which we all work towards, a 1% improvement on a daily basis in the services we offer and our interaction with Clients. The testimonials on our website and the latest one below are proof that we, as a law firm, are fulfilling our client’s requirements and accomplishing the initial and continuing vision. Our clients, colleagues and local communities are the centre of our galaxy!
If you’re considering buying property in Spain and feel overwhelmed by the daunting maze of legal and administrative tasks, let me assure you: My Lawyer in Spain is the team you want in your corner. From the very beginning of our journey to the final stages of purchase, their expertise, professionalism, and personal touch made all the difference.
Our experience with Joaquin and Marien in particular was nothing short of exceptional. They didn’t just guide us through the process- they made it seamless, stress-free, and even enjoyable.
Joaquin Cutillas Temprano was outstanding, his explanations in English and his communication style was so incredibly helpful in easing any worries or concerns we had throughout the process.
What truly sets My Lawyer in Spain apart is their personal approach. They took the time to understand our needs, preferences, and concerns. They were always available to answer questions, explain the nuances of the Spanish legal system, and provide reassurance whenever we needed it.
Their ability to communicate complex legal terms in a clear and relatable way was especially helpful. As first-time buyers in Spain, we never felt out of our depth because we knew Joaquin and Marien Gimenez Bernabe were there to guide us every step of the way.
What impressed us most was how My Lawyer in Spain went above and beyond their remit. They didn’t just “do the job”—they exceeded every expectation. From offering local insights to recommending trustworthy service providers and even checking in after the purchase was complete, their commitment to client satisfaction was evident in every interaction…and they did it all with good humour (and Joaquin even managed to throw in some good old fashioned Welsh slang from his time studying in the UK)! If you’re looking for a reliable, trustworthy, and highly skilled legal team in Spain, look no further. My Lawyer in Spain is the gold standard. And to Joaquin and Marien—thank you from the bottom of our hearts for making our dream a reality!
Five stars doesn’t do them justice. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
